Helms Bakery

Within the historic site of the fabled Helms Bakery, which delivered its last bread in 1969, rises an adaptive reuse project undertaken by Studio UNLTD.  The renovation of the 6,880 square foot bow-trussed former garage space brings to the Culver City Arts District a majestic market hall with soaring ceilings and abundant natural light.  The studio employs a modern yet nostalgic design vernacular to reintroduce present-day Angelenos to the Helms brand whose identity is indelibly woven into the cultural fabric of the city.

Founding Principal

Historic details of the building are reproduced along the new façade that match the original 1930’s construction, and custom Art-Deco pendants add to the charm.

Repeated iterations of custom Art-Deco inspired arched wood “storefronts” connect the design lexicon of the bakery to the adjacent dinette.
